Green Market Report held its 2024 Women in Cannabis Summit on May 16 in New York City. The attendees were treated to an amazing afternoon of wonderful panels each diving into a different part of the business world and addressing the challenges of working in cannabis. From the combination of commerce and culture to pitch decks to brand building – there was something from everyone. It was a judgment-free zone to ask questions and network. It was supportive and inspiring. Thank you to our sponsors who helped make this event a success: Duree & Co., The Cannabist, Pax, The Travel Agency, KCSA Communications, The Bureau, Grön, Feuerstein Kulick, and Mattio Communications.

As the only industry source-identifying and championing women, spotlighting their achievements, and recognizing them in annual summits, Green Market’s NY 2004 summit was distressingly unmindful of women who were singled out and nominated, and completely ignored. At least Rianna Young, founder of Happy Hounds, nominated by Women’s Enterprise Action Loan Fund (WEALF), was not acknowledged in any way–not even a letter of commendation noting that an organization had taken note of her accomplishments and endorsed her for an award. Nor was she invited to join the summit as a participant. Surely, the $99 nomination fee, the same cost as an admission fee, could have given her an entry pass and an opportunity to network with her professional colleagues. As for WEALF, the only acknowledgement received was a computer receipt for its $99nomination fee. Surely, a publication that is committed to growing an industry, fostering inclusivity and entrepreneurship that brings creative ideas and increase profitability, wants to know the Rianna’s who may be too new to be on the radar but bring energy and enthusiasm to the market. Knowledge of who else is out-there I assume is why, you had a call for open nominations. This was an opportunity. One you missed, and unfortunately so did Rianna and all those other nominees who may not have been award-winners but deserve to be named for their contributions and to show the growing strength of women in the industry and the nominating organizations who believe in their continuing success and the importance of Green Market Report’s role in telling and promoting their stories.

Hi Melanie,
We had a record 88 nominations for our awards. It was a difficult decision for each category. The fee helps pay for the award software, trophies and allow the winners to attend. It is also a way to bring in revenue as we have a staff of 5 and we don’t charge for the news or newsletters. We need income beyond digital advertising and that comes from awards and events. With regard to the event, there is a cost associated with each person that attends and it is getting harder every year to find sponsors. This was also produced in NYC, which is notoriously expensive for events. Maybe next year we can convince more companies to sponsor guest passes? We agree that Rianna is amazing and even featured her in video in the past from interviews we taped at the CWCB Expo. Thank you for your feedback.

Thank you for your response. 88 women nominated! That’s a powerful statement about women willing to take risks in a complicated industry. Why not name them? There’s strength in numbers.
